Private insurance has to help too

Not on Medicaid? District of Columbia’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: Habilitative services mandate (D.C. Law 16-198, 2006) requires fully-insured plans to cover ABA/OT/PT/speech for autism; 2013-2014 amendments explicitly named ABA in the habilitative-services definition; no arbitrary session or dollar caps when medically necessary

Waiver programs worth knowing

Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In District of Columbia: DDS-administered HCBS waivers: IDD Waiver and Individual and Family Support (IFS) Waiver (adults 18+, IFS capped $75,000/yr; DDS waiver unit 202-730-1556); HSCSN plan for children on SSI
