ABA therapy in North Carolina

North Carolina Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2015. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.

Does Medicaid cover ABA in North Carolina? Yes.

THE COVERAGE PATHWAY

Covered as Research-Based Behavioral Health Treatment (RB-BHT) for ASD under Clinical Coverage Policy 8F, via EPSDT for beneficiaries under 21 (adults 21+ possible if medically necessary); accessed through NC Medicaid Managed Care Standard Plans, Behavioral Health I/DD Tailored Plans, or LME/MCOs

WHO RUNS IT

NC Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Benefits (NC Medicaid); Medicaid Contact Center (888) 245-0179; provider portal NCTracks

You don’t have to memorize any of this — we work with North Carolina’s system every day.

Getting approved, in three steps

North Carolina requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.

  1. 1

    Round up the diagnosis paperwork

An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.

  2. 2

We build and submit the plan

Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in North Carolina — forms, follow-ups, and all.

  3. 3

    Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.

Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.

The fine print, if you want it (North Carolina’s exact rules)

Provider must obtain prior approval before rendering RB-BHT: Licensed Qualified Autism Service Provider (LQASP, e.g. licensed BCBA/psychologist) submits comprehensive diagnostic assessment plus a measurable treatment plan to the health plan/LME-MCO; plan reviewed at least every 6 months

Coverage details in North Carolina

How many hours a week?

North Carolina doesn't set one fixed number — hours are approved child by child. Hours individualized to authorized treatment plan (industry norm ~10-25 focused, 26-40 comprehensive hours a week).

Private insurance has to help too

Not on Medicaid? North Carolina’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: Enacted Oct 2015 (SB 676, effective July 2016); covers under age 19; adaptive behavior treatment capped at $40,000/yr (CPI-adjusted; cap still in place)

Waiver programs worth knowing

Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In North Carolina: NC Innovations Waiver (I/DD, long waitlist); CAP/C (Community Alternatives Program for Children)

What does ABA actually cost in North Carolina?

North Carolina Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $83 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
