ABA therapy in Kansas
Kansas Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2014. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.
Does Medicaid cover ABA in Kansas? Yes.
THE COVERAGE PATHWAY
ABA covered under KanCare (Medicaid state plan/EPSDT, effective Jan 2017) as autism specialized services (Intensive Individual Supports); delivered via KanCare MCOs Sunflower, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, Healthy Blue
WHO RUNS IT
Kansas Dept. of Health & Environment (KDHE) Div. of Health Care Finance, with KDADS for HCBS; kancare.ks.gov / KMAP portal
You don’t have to memorize any of this — we work with Kansas’s system every day.
Getting approved, in three steps
Kansas requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.
1
Round up the diagnosis paperwork
An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.
2
We build and submit the plan
Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in Kansas — forms, follow-ups, and all.
3
Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.
Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.
The fine print, if you want it (Kansas’s exact rules)
All ABA requires prior auth through the member's KanCare MCO: physician prescription, autism diagnosis, and BCBA-supervised treatment plan; Medical Necessity Form for Autism Waiver/dual authorizations

How many hours a week?
Initial soft limit 25 hours/week technician-delivered (IIS); more hours authorized on showing of medical necessity
Private insurance has to help too
Not on Medicaid? Kansas’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: 2014 (HB 2744, signed 4/16/2014): ABA for children under 12; caps of 1,300 hours a year for 4 yrs from diagnosis then 520 hours a year; also created ABA licensure act (federal parity may limit cap enforcement)
Waiver programs worth knowing
Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In Kansas: Kansas HCBS Autism Waiver (ages 0-5; parent support/respite, does not fund ABA itself); I/DD Waiver; SED Waiver
What does ABA actually cost in Kansas?
Kansas Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $65 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
