ABA therapy in California

California Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2011. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.

Getting approved, in three steps

California requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.

    An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.

    We build and submit the plan

    Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in California — forms, follow-ups, and all.

    Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.

    Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.

Physician or psychologist must recommend BHT as medically necessary; the Qualified Autism Service (QAS) Provider submits an individualized behavioral treatment plan to the managed care plan (or Regional Center/DHCS for FFS), re-reviewed every 6 months

Private insurance has to help too

Not on Medicaid? California’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: SB 946 (2011), effective July 1, 2012; requires state-regulated plans to cover behavioral health treatment for autism/PDD; no age or dollar caps in current law

Waiver programs worth knowing

Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In California: HCBS-DD Waiver (1915(c), administered by DDS through 21 Regional Centers) and Self-Determination Program waiver; both waive parental income via institutional deeming

What does ABA actually cost in California?

California Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $78 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.

How to find an ABA therapist in California

Searching for an ABA therapist in California — or for autism therapy in California, or autism services in California, which turn up much the same list — gives you two different kinds of result: directories that list anyone who paid to be listed, and providers who can tell you what is actually open for your address. The questions below separate them. They work on us as well as on anyone else — if we can’t answer one, that is worth knowing before you enroll.

In-home ABA therapy in California

Most ABA services in California are delivered where the child already is — at home, in a classroom or daycare room, and over video for parent coaching. That is the model we run. Ask any provider which settings they can actually staff near you, not which ones appear on their website. Coverage is a staffing question, and the honest answer changes week to week.

What a BCBA in California actually does

A BCBA — Board Certified Behavior Analyst — assesses your child, writes the treatment plan, sets the goals, and supervises the technicians who run the sessions. You should know the name of the BCBA in California assigned to your case, how often they observe sessions in person, and how many cases they carry. You can verify any certificant yourself in the BACB registry.

Autism testing in California

ABA is not the same appointment as a diagnosis. Autism testing in California is done by a developmental pediatrician, child psychologist or child neurologist, and most health plans want that evaluation on file before they will authorize therapy. An autism evaluation in California is a separate booking from therapy, with its own waitlist, so it is worth starting now rather than after you have chosen a provider. If your child is under three, early intervention autism services in California will evaluate for free, without a diagnosis or a referral. If you are still at that stage, start with how to find a diagnostician and what an autism evaluation involves. You do not need us to get one.

What “best ABA therapy in California” should mean

There is no ranking body, so nobody can honestly call themselves the best ABA provider in California. What you can compare is specific: how quickly a BCBA does the first assessment, whether goals are written for your family’s actual routines, how much supervision each technician gets, whether you are told about turnover before a new face arrives, and whether the provider will put a realistic start date in writing. Those are answerable questions. “Best” is not.

  2. 2. What is your realistic start date for my address — not your average across California?
  3. 3. Which settings can you staff for us: home, school, daycare, telehealth?
  4. 4. What happens to my child’s schedule when a technician leaves?
  5. 5. What will I owe after insurance, and when will you tell me if that changes?
