BCBAs: do the work you trained for.
You didn’t earn a certification to drown in unbillable admin. We build BCBA roles around clinical quality: reasonable caseloads, protected supervision time, and a support team that handles the insurance machine.
BCBA salary: the honest guide
What sets BCBA pay
State and metro first, then years certified, setting, caseload model, and whether a role includes clinical leadership. Licensure states with fewer BCBAs per family tend to pay a premium — exactly the markets where we’re growing.
Ranges by state
This section will publish verified state-by-state salary data — we don’t print numbers we can’t stand behind. Want a real quote for your market today? Ask us and we’ll give you the band in the first conversation, and read how ABA pay actually works before you compare two offers.
Beyond base salary
Weigh the whole offer: caseload size, admin support, supervision expectations, CEU budget, and schedule control. A bigger number attached to an unmanageable caseload is a pay cut in disguise.
Asked by every BCBA we interview
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst is the clinician who owns a child’s ABA program: they assess, write the treatment plan, train and supervise the technicians delivering it, read the data and change what isn’t working. It is a master’s-level credential.
A qualifying graduate degree, behavior-analytic coursework that meets the certification board’s requirements, supervised fieldwork hours, and a passing score on the BCBA exam. Many states then add their own license on top — our state pages note which ones.
Sized so you can actually do clinical work — assessment, plan design, supervision, and parent coaching — instead of living in billing software. We staff intake and authorization support so paperwork doesn’t eat your calendar.
Yes, and we hope you will. Growing RBTs into analysts is how this field gets better — supervision time is scheduled and counted as real work, not squeezed into your evenings.
Both exist here. Telehealth supervision and parent coaching are part of our model, and in-home and school-based roles are open across all 50 states — tell us what your life needs.
The certification board sets five: a qualifying master’s degree or higher, behavior-analytic coursework from an acceptable sequence, supervised fieldwork, a passing score on the BCBA exam, and agreement to the ethics code and ongoing recertification. Requirements are revised periodically, so confirm the current standard with the certification board before you enroll in anything — a course that met the old sequence may not meet the new one.
Fieldwork is counted in supervised hours accrued over a minimum number of months, with a cap on how many you can bank per month, and a required proportion spent in direct contact with the supervisor. That monthly cap is the part people miss: it means fieldwork has a floor in calendar time no matter how many hours a week you work. The board publishes the current totals, and a supervisor who cannot state them from memory is not one you want signing your hours.
Your supervisor observes you working with clients, meets with you on a set cadence, and signs a monthly form recording what was supervised. Supervision must be contracted before it starts, and hours accrued without that agreement in place generally do not count. If you are accruing with us we tell you at the outset how many hours a month we can realistically sign, rather than discovering a shortfall a year in. How supervision runs here.
A Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst — the bachelor’s-level credential that sits between RBT and BCBA. A BCaBA can do more independent clinical work than an RBT, including some assessment and program writing, but must practise under the supervision of a BCBA. It is a genuine middle rung for someone with a bachelor’s degree who is not ready to commit to a master’s.
Bring your clinical standards. We’ll match them.
