Cost of ABA therapy in New Jersey
The honest version: with New Jersey Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket. With private insurance, you pay your plan’s normal cost-sharing. Here are the real numbers and where they come from.
The numbers in New Jersey
WITH MEDICAID
$0
out of pocket for most families
New Jersey Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids under 21 and pays providers directly. Your job is the paperwork — and we do that part with you.
WHAT THE STATE PAYS PROVIDERS
$60/hr
for one-on-one ABA (97153-type services)
Published rates vary by clinician credential (technician vs. BCBA) and setting, which is why this is a range — never one magic number. Source: New Jersey’s published Medicaid fee information. This is the state’s bill, not yours.
WITH PRIVATE INSURANCE
Your plan’s normal cost-sharing
New Jersey law requires state-regulated plans to cover autism care (on the books since 2009). You pay deductibles and copays like any other medical care — and we tell you the exact number for your plan before you start.
Rates and rules change on the state’s schedule, not ours — we keep this page current, but your plan’s written verification is the number that counts. That’s why the coverage check comes first, free.
New Jersey cost questions
For most Medicaid families, nothing out of pocket. New Jersey Medicaid covers ABA for eligible children as a medical benefit, and the state pays the provider directly. Behind the scenes, New Jersey Medicaid reimburses providers about $60 per hour for one-on-one ABA, depending on the clinician's credential level and setting — but that is the state's bill, not yours.
Your plan's normal cost-sharing — deductible, copays or coinsurance, up to your out-of-pocket maximum. The reason coverage exists at all: Enacted 2009 (P.L. 2009 c.115, effective 2/9/2010) — first state to also cover other developmental disabilities; under 21; original $36,000/yr ABA cap (inflation-indexed) rendered unenforceable under federal parity per DOBI Bulletin 10-02
Those figures are full-price provider billing across many weekly hours — the amount insurers negotiate against, not what covered families pay. Once Medicaid or a covered private plan is in place, your cost is your plan's cost-sharing, which is a completely different number.
Enacted 2009 (P.L. 2009 c.115, effective 2/9/2010) — first state to also cover other developmental disabilities; under 21; original $36,000/yr ABA cap (inflation-indexed) rendered unenforceable under federal parity per DOBI Bulletin 10-02 A mandate only reaches state-regulated plans, though — a self-funded employer plan is governed by federal law and can set its own terms regardless of what New Jersey requires. So autism insurance coverage in New Jersey is really two questions: what the state mandates, and what kind of plan you actually hold. Your plan documents or HR will tell you which one you have.
Yes. New Jersey Medicaid ABA therapy coverage is not optional for the state: it covers medically necessary ABA for eligible children — that obligation comes from the federal EPSDT requirement, so it holds in every state. What differs here is the route in: NJ FamilyCare ABA benefit launched 4/1/2020 under EPSDT for members under 21 with ASD; administered entirely through the five NJ FamilyCare MCOs — Aetna Better Health, Fidelis Care NJ (formerly WellCare), Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Wellpoint (formerly Amerigroup) Pediatric ABA therapy in New Jersey still needs a current diagnostic evaluation on file and, in most cases, prior authorization before sessions start.
Paying cash is the last option to consider, not the first. Before that, check three things: whether your child qualifies for New Jersey Medicaid on their own disability regardless of household income, which many families assume they don't; whether a waiver applies — in New Jersey: No autism-specific waiver — ABA is a state-plan MCO benefit; Children's System of Care (PerformCare) programs for youth with I/DD-ASD; DDD Supports Program and Community Care Program at 21+ (all under NJ's 1115 Comprehensive Demonstration); and whether your employer plan excludes ABA outright or merely requires authorization you haven't filed yet. Those three account for most of the families who believe they have no coverage.
Ask about waivers before assuming you'll pay cash. In New Jersey: No autism-specific waiver — ABA is a state-plan MCO benefit; Children's System of Care (PerformCare) programs for youth with I/DD-ASD; DDD Supports Program and Community Care Program at 21+ (all under NJ's 1115 Comprehensive Demonstration)
