Cost of ABA therapy in Delaware
The honest version: with Delaware Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket. With private insurance, you pay your plan’s normal cost-sharing. Here are the real numbers and where they come from.
The numbers in Delaware
WITH MEDICAID
$0
out of pocket for most families
Delaware Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids under 21 and pays providers directly. Your job is the paperwork — and we do that part with you.
WHAT THE STATE PAYS PROVIDERS
Set behind the scenes
Delaware doesn’t publish one simple, current hourly rate for ABA — payment runs through the state’s own model. It doesn’t change your side of the math: with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
WITH PRIVATE INSURANCE
Your plan’s normal cost-sharing
Delaware law requires state-regulated plans to cover autism care (on the books since 2012). You pay deductibles and copays like any other medical care — and we tell you the exact number for your plan before you start.
Rates and rules change on the state’s schedule, not ours — we keep this page current, but your plan’s written verification is the number that counts. That’s why the coverage check comes first, free.
Delaware cost questions
For most Medicaid families, nothing out of pocket. Delaware Medicaid covers ABA for eligible children as a medical benefit, and the state pays the provider directly. Delaware doesn't publish one simple, current hourly rate — payment runs through the state's own model — but that's the state's side of the ledger, not your bill.
Your plan's normal cost-sharing — deductible, copays or coinsurance, up to your out-of-pocket maximum. The reason coverage exists at all: SB 22 enacted 2012 (effective 12/11/2012); under age 21; ABA capped at $36,000/yr, CPI-adjusted annually; no visit limits
Those figures are full-price provider billing across many weekly hours — the amount insurers negotiate against, not what covered families pay. Once Medicaid or a covered private plan is in place, your cost is your plan's cost-sharing, which is a completely different number.
SB 22 enacted 2012 (effective 12/11/2012); under age 21; ABA capped at $36,000/yr, CPI-adjusted annually; no visit limits A mandate only reaches state-regulated plans, though — a self-funded employer plan is governed by federal law and can set its own terms regardless of what Delaware requires. So autism insurance coverage in Delaware is really two questions: what the state mandates, and what kind of plan you actually hold. Your plan documents or HR will tell you which one you have.
Yes. Delaware Medicaid ABA therapy coverage is not optional for the state: it covers medically necessary ABA for eligible children — that obligation comes from the federal EPSDT requirement, so it holds in every state. What differs here is the route in: EPSDT ABA coverage for under-21 via Diamond State Health Plan managed care (Highmark Health Options, AmeriHealth Caritas DE, Delaware First Health); DHSS Regulation 1170 sets ABA provider standards Pediatric ABA therapy in Delaware still needs a current diagnostic evaluation on file and, in most cases, prior authorization before sessions start.
Paying cash is the last option to consider, not the first. Before that, check three things: whether your child qualifies for Delaware Medicaid on their own disability regardless of household income, which many families assume they don't; whether a waiver applies — in Delaware: DDDS Lifespan Waiver (autism, IDD, Prader-Willi; replaced separate child/adult waivers); and whether your employer plan excludes ABA outright or merely requires authorization you haven't filed yet. Those three account for most of the families who believe they have no coverage.
Ask about waivers before assuming you'll pay cash. In Delaware: DDDS Lifespan Waiver (autism, IDD, Prader-Willi; replaced separate child/adult waivers)
